30 for 30 - Jimmy The Greek - What a Great Documentary - GotAction.com

“The NFL Today” on CBS was one of the preeminent sports programs on television in the early 1980s. It was a perfect combination of reporting, analysis, predictions, humor and talent. But there was no personality on the show more popular than Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder. Snyder was born Dimetrios Georgios Synodinos in Steubenville, Ohio.

According to his New York Times obituary of April 22, 1996, Snyder's family roots were on the island of Chios, Tholo potami in the Aegean Sea. Jimmy overcame childhood tragedy, moved to Las Vegas, and eventually became the biggest name in the world of sports handicapping.

When CBS added him as an “analyst” on “The NFL Today,” “The Greek” not only further increased his stature as a sort of national folk hero, but he also gained an air of respectability never before associated with gamblers.

Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Fritz Mitchell, who broke in as an intern on “The NFL Today,” will examine Snyder’s impact on the growth of sports gambling, while also taking a fresh look at The Greek’s tragic downfall. As a teenager in Ohio, he became acquainted with bookmakers.

According to his autobiography Jimmy the Greek, Snyder bet US$10,000 on the 1948 election between Thomas Dewey and Harry S. Truman, getting 17–1 odds for Truman to win. In a later interview he indicated that he knew Truman was going to win because Dewey had a mustache and "American women didn't trust men with a mustache".

He invested money in oil drilling and coal mining, but when those ventures failed, Snyder moved to Las Vegas in 1956 and began a weekly pro-football betting line.

Snyder appeared in a cameo in the 1981 comedy film The Cannonball Run as a bookie. In the movie he offered 50–1 odds against Formula One driver Jamie Blake (played by Dean Martin) and gambler Morris Fenderbaum (played by Sammy Davis Jr.) winning the Cannonball coast-to-coast endurance race. Jimmy the Greek and Dean Martin were childhood acquaintances in Steubenville, Ohio.

On November 10, 2009, ESPN aired a show in their 30 for 30 series titled The Legend of Jimmy the Greek, which was produced by Fritz Mitchell. Commentary was provided by, among others, Brent Musburger, Irv Cross and Phyllis George from The NFL Today, plus Anthony Snyder Jimmy's son, as well as his brother Johnny and sister Angie. The show also acknowledges his role in the first sportcasts of poker tournaments.

Although Jimmy was largely unknown outside of the United States, in 1974 his name achieved international renown. After beating George Foreman to regain the world heavyweight championship, Muhammad Ali, in the midst of an interview with David Frost, looked into the camera and addressed his doubters. "All of you bow" he said. "All of my critics crawl...All of you suckers bow... If you wanna know any damn thing about boxing, don't go to no boxing experts in Las Vegas, don't go to no Jimmy The Greek. Come to Muhammad Ali."

"The black is a better athlete to begin with because he's been bred to be that way -- because of his high thighs and big thighs that goes up into his back, and they can jump higher and run faster because of their bigger thighs. This goes back all the way to the Civil War when during the slave trading, the owner -- the slave owner would breed his big black to his big woman so that he could have a big black kid."

I never really remember hearing from or of him after he made that statement....
He was fired by CBS, retired from broadcasting, and died 12 years ago. The end.

Why New England should strongly consider Terrell Owens for the 2013-2014 NFL Football Season

GotAction, Inc. believes Terrell Owens would be a great asset to the New England Patriots.

With the 2013 NFL regular season just underway, there are many possible franchises in need of a veteran wide receiver to fill the offensive void plagued by injuries. According to league sources, numerous NFL general managers have already contacted Terrell Owens agent inquiring about his current status and availability. From the outside looking in, GotAction, Inc. feels that Terrell Owens would be a perfect match for the New England patriots.

Below are a couple of reasons why we feel this should happen.
  1. They can get him for a low cost
  2. He's still in great shape
  3. They are in need of a veteran receiver who possesses experience in the NFL whom can provide knowledge and leadership to the young blood.
  4. Gives Tom Brady a big body, physical target that poses a threat over the middle of the field.
  5. To prove he still has value and his hunger to exceed and play for a world championship franchise.
  6.  Currently Tom Brady has: Gronkowski (injured) Danny Amendola, Tim Tebow along with a bunch of unproven rookies who need a leader and an experienced potential hall of famer.
  7. Terrell Owens has learned his lesson about keeping himself, his actions and his overall persona in line due to his release from the Seahawks and lack of interest thereafter.

Briere lands in the perfect spot

Five years older, $47 million richer and considerably more experienced than he was upon leaving town six years ago, Daniel Briere had a slightly different view Thursday morning when it came to unrestricted free agency. If only he had a means of peeking around the corner for the one answer he needed.

“I wish I knew which team was winning the Stanley Cup next year,” Briere said by telephone, hours before signing a two-year deal worth $8 million with the Canadiens. “It would make it a whole lot easier.”

It would, indeed.

Briere ultimately put his faith in the Canadiens, the team he grew up cheering for as a kid while growing up in Quebec and the team he shunned after helping the Sabres reach the conference finals in consecutive years. Two weeks ago, Philadelphia bought out the final two seasons of an eight-year deal worth $52 million and allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent.

Once again, Briere landed in an enviable position after a team allowed him to walk away. Because his contract was bought out, he was allowed to sign with his new team before free agency opened at noon today. Essentially, he had a head start on joining the team of his choice. He also had plenty of suitors.

“You’re trying to find a fit with a team that is excited to bring you on board, a team that feels they have a need for you,” he said. “That’s not possible everywhere.”

It will be interesting to see what happens in free agency. Boston and Dallas made a blockbuster trade Thursday. You can expect more major transactions today. The Sabres’ big move going into the free-agent signing period was … waiving Nathan Gerbe. That should inspire the fan base, no?

By the way, the Sabres were dreaming if they thought they had any real chance of bringing back Briere. Check his DOB: 10/6/77. Check their roster. He’ll be 36 years old this season, and they’re not going anywhere. It’s one thing for them to make their fans suffer, but there was no reason for him to suffer with them.

He had only $5 million remaining on his contract – $3 million for this season and $2 million the following year – when the Flyers cut him loose.

His new deal works for all involved. Money was the least of his concerns, but Montreal is paying him more than he would have made with Philly. The Habs get a proven playoff performer at a bargain price by NHL standards. He has 50 goals and 109 points in 108 career playoff games. He’s certain to help their power play.

Adding his salary he’ll make with Montreal to his buyout, it’s a $5.65 million score for each of the next two seasons.

“I am super excited to join the Canadiens,” said Briere via text. “Playing for my childhood team is a big thrill.”

Montreal fans booed him for years because he didn’t play there after leaving Buffalo. It was a compliment of the highest order. The Habs won the Northeast Division last season and appear to be trending upward under new General Manager Marc Bergevin. Briere also holds assistant GM Larry Carriere in high regard.

“That’s why they’re so interesting,” Briere said. “They’re a team on the rise. For me, that’s a team that’s interesting because of their history and the fact that I grew up cheering for them as a kid. There’s Larry, and I really like what they’ve done the last couple of years.”

He made similar comments about the Flyers and Don Luce when he signed the long-term deal with Philly. He led the Flyers to the Cup finals in 2010, the year Patrick Kane scored the series-clinching goal and his first title with the Blackhawks. Philadelphia made the playoffs in five straight years before falling to 10th after a miserable start last season.

For all the mistakes the Flyers have made in recent years, and there were many, signing Briere was not one of them. The deal worked for both sides. They came close to winning a title but fell short. They’re putting their money on Vincent Lecavalier, who signed a five-year contract worth $22.5 million.

The Canadiens were putting their money on Briere. And he’s pinning his hopes on them.

“Nobody knows what’s going to happen,” he said. “Everybody wishes they knew how everything would go down. Unfortunately, they don’t.”
